An Au pair theoretically should work 30 hours per week, plus 2 nights of babysitting. These 30 hours could be spread over 6 days, 5 hours per day, or five days at a rate of 6 hours per day; within each day hours cab be distributed separately; for example, it may be that you have to work from 8 to 11 am, then free, and return to work at 3 to 6 pm. Most of our Au pairs, will have the weekend off, although this logically depends on the needs of each family.
First of all, a dignified treatment and in what is possible be treated as a member of their family. The family will provide the Au pair accommodation, meals and pocket money for their expenses. For the accommodation, the family will provide a single room to the Au pair. Meals will also be provided for the family this is one of big differences, in other countries sometimes it does not give much food cult.
It is very important to consider the difficulty of adapting to a new culture and ways of life, probably at the beginning there would be a “culture shock”, meals, timetables, type of houses, character… everything is very different. Is the Au pair the one that has to adapt to the family, with the difficulties that this would have. You have to be very flexible as an Au pair. At the end is the Au pair who decides if what the family offers compensates; sure we are not going to be as good as at home, but we think that our goal is learn a language and sometimes we will find some difficulty, but we always have to consider that we are in a strange home and sometimes their rules and customs are different from ours.
The teeneger recives form the family life, room, board and weekly pay for personal expenses. He/she will have free hours to attend class, study and/or recreation, plus day and a half free per week or two full days, depends on each family. In exchange: the teenager helps with the care and supervision of the children, accompanying them to school and walkings, bathing and feeding them, and helping with small household chores, such as dust, cooking, vacuuming the house, tender and ironing clothes, pick up dishes… as that if she/he was the eldest daughter/son in the family.
